The Conservative Talent Landscape

Why create another job board?

This November & December, I am crowdfunding for “The Conservative Job Board” to have an actual website platform and some associated software tools.

I wanted to take a minute to share why this efforts is so meaningful to me.

When I was first trying to get hired on conservative political campaigns from 2015-2018, I heard constantly that there wasn’t really a good place to just see open jobs.

Campaigns rely on their internal networks, along with friends and busines partners to generate leads.

Candidates had to hope they were part of that network, which they general could be by volunteering and networking. But it was tough, and it took time.

I relied on word of mouth, until I was helped out by the folks over at Majority Hunter. This site required you to interview for an account, then you could view open roles and recruiters would use your resume for placements.

Majority Hunter helped me get two different jobs, and I constantly recommended them to my network. They were a huge help to the movement.

Because getting work was personally a struggle for me these years, I worked hard to grow my network by helping other people find work and employees.

Most of my campaign roles included building internship teams, so this was something I enjoyed and became pretty experienced in.

That being said, most campaign operatives burnout or switch industries within 3 years.

There are a variety of reasons for this:

  • The lack of available work in off-years

  • The high-intensity work & long hours on campaigns

  • The lack of formal HR processes to protect junior staff

Most campaign operatives try to get out and transfer their experiences over to non-profit or business work, but that’s easier said than done.

The existing public job boards are pretty limited.

When I tried to get out of campaign work, I couldn’t find the right opportunity, and I was looking regularly for most of the period from 2017-2019.

Luckily, a personal connection told me about an opening at Students for Life Action, the organization I currently work at full-time.

My experience taught me first-hand that our movement has a talent problem.

If you would like to help solve this problem, you can view, contribute, and share the crowdfunding page here.
